Scholastic Programs Drive Inline Hockey Growth in the USA
In a late 2008 press release AAU National Hockey Chair Keith Noll states,
“Scholastic programs have been the driving source for growth in the sport the
last few years.” (read
more) Included in the release was his announcement of the AAU West Coast National Scholastic Championships
to combine with the AAU West Coast National Club Championships as elements of new AAU sanctioned programs
aimed to address growth in the 2008-09 season from California to New York. The
release also announced the Interscholastic Hockey Federation (IHF) as the
scholastic host to work with Tournament Director Ken Murchison of Corona Inline
for this prestigious event.
In 2009, the AAU will hold nationals on both coasts in a move to ease the
economic burden associated with travel costs and help those teams wishing to
compete with two venues to choose from. Talks are already under way for the 2010
nationals to be held in Orlando and the possibility of media coverage by ESPN
and funding assistance to top tier teams.
In June 2007, the AAU High School Nationals were held at the Anaheim Hockey Club
(now relocated and known as Corona Inline). Following rigorous tournament play to qualify within their respective states, sixteen teams in the Varsity division, eight Junior Varsity, and four Middle Schools paid their way to play for the trophy against the toughest teams in the country and proudly, although in many cases unofficially, represent their schools.
The Santiago Sharks of Corona, CA took top Varsity honors that year narrowly
defeating the previous year's champions, the Marina Vikings of Huntington Beach,
CA. ( read the full report ).
Last year, the Nationals were held in Atlanta, GA and Walton High School of Marietta,
GA were declared winners of the Varsity High School division. Will it be your
club who takes home the trophy this year?
